It’s all very well and good me sitting here and telling you how to get motivated or sharing motivational tips but the truth is sometimes that isn’t enough. You will have days where it is the last thing you want to do and I totally get it but give some of these a go and see if it helps. The worst thing you can do is feel guilty about it happens because it’s life and it peaks and troffs. Remove the guilt because with all the best intentions it’s not always that easy to motivate ourselves, I really wish it was. I find that when I’m on a roll its really easy to workout and move my body but when I lose my mojo it’s pretty much gone.
So what do you do when motivation isn’t going to cut it ??
Just do it: (cheers Nike) time for bit of tough love because in all honesty if you have a goal sometimes you just have to suck it up and go the gym/class/workout session. Even if you can’t be bothered because unless there is a genuine reason as to why you can’t go the chances of you feeling much better when you have done it are very high. Yes you probably won’t be motivated to go but the fact you are going is a win and once there it will all work itself out.
Change it up: Give yourself and your body something new, a new stimulus that challenges and excites you. If you have been doing the same thing for a while no wonder you can’t be bothered, there is no get go or reason behind it. It doesn’t have to be a drastic change just switch things around. Our bodies tend to plateau between 6-8 weeks when we stick to the same thing so in terms of programming it needs to change in some way.
Get some help: Book some PT sessions for a couple of months, get pushed out of your comfort zone and learn from them. It always helps to learn something new, surprise yourself and see what your body can do. It also helps that you have paid them and are meeting on a regular basis to make sure you keep going.
Schedule it in: Like any other appointment you have in your day to day get your workouts scheduled in. Look at your week in advance and see where the times are to train. There are 24hrs in a day – we have 8 to sleep, 8 to work and 8 to play around with so see what you can do. This way you make it fit into your lifestyle rather than the other way around so hopefully it removes the chore element from it. Further cement it in by meeting a friend to workout with, whether that’s in the gym or at a class. If you book it in with a friend you have that accountability factor and the social aspect too – pair it with a post workout meal or drink and that’s a nice couple of hours.
And finally you remember your why. Why are you exercising? Think of the benefits, think of how you will achieve said why by going and keep that in your head at all times. Get ready, put your headphones in, get a banging playlist on and just go for it !
